Heritage & Nature Trail

The woodlands surrounding Ballindoolin House are well established mature woods of mixed deciduous trees, the predominant species is beech but there are also oak, sycamore, horse chestnut, hornbeam, hazel, holly, and scots pine.

The woods have a rich habitat value. However as many of the trees in the woods have reached maturity, the Molony family have just finished a rejuvenation programme by removing some invasive shrub species and sowing a large number of native Irish trees. This should rejuvenate the woods and increase their lifespan.

The mature trees provide cover, food and suitable nesting sites for many bird species and mammals. They also hold epiphytic mosses and ferns. The grass layer along the margins attract a variety of insects in Spring and Summer and in the leaf litter and decaying matter there is a healthy invertebrate population.

Even the walls of the house itself, provide a safe habitat for swifts, kestrels, blackbirds, and starlings.

On the ¾ hr. Nature and Heritage Trail through the woodlands, visitors can enjoy the peace and quiet of the natural environment of old Irish woods.
