Melon Pit

The rectangular hot aired flued pit in the walled garden was used for forcing and raising seeds. Melons could also have been grown, in conjunction with other crops. It is tilted towards the West to avail of maximum light. Turf or wood were burnt in the furnace and the subsequent heat and smoke warmed the pit as it travelled through a horizontal chimney around the inside of the pit, exiting vertically in a hidden chimney. The removable roof was made of glass panels.
